Sweet Elsah. Funny how dogs randomly cross your path. A neighbor here in Ferguson saw this poor dog who had lived her life tied to a tree, posted for FREE on NextDoor and decided to save her. I helped her with random set up items and thought this would be another happy ending. Bu unfortunately life threw a wrench in her life and her infant became ill and hospitalized. She could no longer keep her so I learned that she had given Elsah away, again, for FREE on NextDoor.

I tracked down the new home and learned that this man had not been truthful. He was storing Elsah in a dark basement in a cage. Since she had crossed my path, I felt the need to help her. After much negotiating, we ended up buying her back from this not-so-great home for a hefty sum. Because she deserved a chance at a good life.

After searching and searching, a wonderful lady, also here in Ferguson decided to adopt her! YAY! Since she didn't have a fenced yard, a group of us put up a temporary wire fence to give her the needed opportunity to run. Mission accomplished. Until I got a phone call early yesterday morning, that she had escaped through a tiny gap that we had missed.

So off I drove in my pajamas, treats in tow, to search for this crazy girl. With God on her side, I spotted her about a mile from her new home. I hopped out of my car with leash and treats in hand, to retrieve her. Not so easy. She was absolutely not going to hop in my car as pictured in my mind. I grabbed her collar that had my phone number written on it, wrapped the leash around her, but she was absolutely not getting in and in fact kept dragging me further away from my destination. My car. So I sat with both arms around her, in the middle of the street, in my pj's. Without my phone. Talk about a sitting duck. I was NOT going to lose this dog that me and other's had worked so hard on, for a happy ending. So I started screaming for help. HEEELLLP!  I couldn't move, risking her collar slipping over her head. I needed someone to call my husband to help me, as I could not drag her 70 lb self or lift her into my car alone. I felt like I was fighting a grizzly bear. HAHA. Fortunately a neighbor had called the police I'm sure saying "there is a crazy lady sitting in the middle of the street in her pajamas holding a dog and shouting  for help"! When the officer pulled up, I was never so glad to see a strong man, ready to help me. Between the 2 of us, the officer helped me carry her back to my car, getting her to safety. What an experience, all for one plain dog. Looking back, this sight had to be pretty funny to onlookers. : - )

LOVEY...a plain ole' white stray cat who stole my heart.

We have RING cameras in front of our home and this little white stray began appearing very early in the mornings to feed with the local racoons and possums in the area. I never spotted her in the daylight, so after a time and with more regular visits from her, I decided to set my alarm to get out of bed at around 5 am, when she would come to our driveway area.

I was in luck...I saw her in person but she was terrified and scampered off quickly every time she saw me. Weeks and weeks went by...with me patiently, sitting in our driveway with pj's on, waiting with a can of cat food in hand. And a yellow fine China plate. After about a month of early rises for me and waiting quietly, she began coming closer and closer, coming out from her hiding place that was near by.

I will always remember the first time she let me touch her. I "felt" like a victorious champion for slowly but surely gaining her trust. So every day I continued to gain more and more of her trust, feeding her (in my pj's) at her preferred time of 5:30 am and than dusk time. It became so that every time I opened the garage, there she was, waiting. And she preferred me petting her while she ate. Petting stopped, her eating paused. She was obviously making up for love she had missed.

I was finally able to scoop her into a cage, so we could get her to a vet. After getting X-rays done due to her tummy looking awfully large, unfortunately she was pregnant and too far along to spay. So she and now her adorable babies have been going through the process of weaning so that they are ready for forever homes. This one very plain ole' white stray cat became such an important little cat to me who is very dear to my heart. Looking forward to her many more chapters, living her best life.

GUCCI. I became involved in the life of this poor dog through a lady in Berkeley, MO who had a pair of parakeets that she was selling on Next Door. Long story short, I saved her birds and found a nice home for them. She kept my number and reached out to me for help. Her niece had taken a dog in that her sister was giving away for free, due to her having no time for Gucci.

The new owner who had just acquired this dog had never had a dog before and obviously needed help.

After asking a friend of mine to help me, we went in person multiple times to try to teach her how to be a dog parent. We offered training sessions and treats, toys, a dog bed, leash, and collar, plus an ID tag. After a few months when I called to check on how things were going, she told me that she had surrendered her to the Humane Society, sadly, because she had no time or patience.

Fortunately the Humane Society let me get her out, after they deemed her unadoptable. She was too broken from being handed off from person to person, never receiving any positivity in her whole life. No one had taken the time to teach her how to be unafraid.

Fortunately a good friend of mine (and her dear husband) in rescue offered to foster this sweet girl, and had a wonderful friend who ended up adopting her.

She is now living her very best life with her human sweet dad and her best friend, who happens to be a chicken. : - )

Bear

Ferguson, MO 2015 Bear was abandoned by his family when they moved. A gift (or curse) that I seem to have is noticing things that others don't when it comes to animals.  I had been observing this home for many months prior, due to the caged area and BEWARE OF DOG sign hanging on the gate. Each time I drove by I hoped that there was not a dog in this confined  hot (or freezing depending on the time of year) small area. After coming home from the airport after a nice vacation, my husband and I passed this house and I felt the urgency to physically check on this situation, hoping to find an empty, pen. As I approached the pen I sighed a huge relief because I didn't see a dog, and it was a swelteringly hot day. I stood at the gate seeing nothing more than a board leaning up against the side of the house and an upside down empty torn up dish, inside the pen.  Suddenly,  there was movement.  A large black dog began backing himself out from behind the board...the only shade for him. He timidly walked up to the gate and leaned against the pen wall and looked up at me as if to say "please help me". I knew he needed my help. The grass was over a foot tall and the beat up car had not moved for months. I contacted the Ferguson Police Department who contacted The Humane Society of Missouri and the investigation began.  With the good help of many caring people including The Humane Society, St. Louis Animal Care and Control, Laura & Bob Safron, Betsy Hall Miller & family, Paul Flotron and many, many others, he was saved.  And because of a very weak moment on my part and not wanting to put him through any more change, he is now a member of the our family.

"That is the biggest Boston Terrier I have ever seen" said the soon to be forever dad. I had heard that this family loved Boston Terriers. Well, he was just about 40 lbs. bigger then a Boston Terrier, but I had to try. Lucky for Henry. They fell in love and Henry lived his life out with the sweetest family ever, after living life in a cage until we were able to help him.
