LET THEM SNIFF ON WALKS

Letting dogs sniff on walks (scent walks) provides vital mental stimulation, reduces stress, and increases satisfaction by allowing them to explore their environment, often tiring them out more than a fast-paced walk. This activity boosts dopamine, helps with anxiety, and is essentially "reading the news" for dogs.

Key Benefits of Sniffing
  • Mental Stimulation:
Sniffing works a dog's brain, making it a "sniffari" or mental workout
  • Stress Reduction: Allowing dogs to sniff lowers their heart rate and releases calming hormones, reducing anxiety.
  • Better Behavior: Scent-heavy walks can lead to a calmer, more content dog at home.
  • Physical Activity: It offers a different kind of exercise that is beneficial for all, especially older or arthritic dogs.

 Tips for Productive Sniff Walks

  • Let Them Lead: Allow your dog to choose the route and spend as much time as they want at a specific spot.
  • 10-Minute Rule: Aim for at least 10–15 minutes of dedicated, uninterrupted sniffing time per walk.
  • Identify "Scent Times": Differentiate between a "potty walk" (quick, focused) and a "sniff walk" (leisurely).
  • 10 Minutes = 1 Hour: Some suggest that 10 minutes of sniffing can provide the same stimulation as a 1-hour walk.

“Humanity's true moral test, its fundamental test…consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.”
~ Milan Kundera

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
~ Margaret Mead
