Sweet Elsah. Funny how dogs randomly cross your path. A neighbor here in Ferguson saw this poor dog who had lived her life tied to a tree, posted for FREE on NextDoor and decided to save her. I helped her with random set up items and thought this would be another happy ending. Bu unfortunately life threw a wrench in her life and her infant became ill and hospitalized. She could no longer keep her so I learned that she had given Elsah away, again, for FREE on NextDoor.
I tracked down the new home and learned that this man had not been truthful. He was storing Elsah in a dark basement in a cage. Since she had crossed my path, I felt the need to help her. After much negotiating, we ended up buying her back from this not-so-great home for a hefty sum. Because she deserved a chance at a good life.
After searching and searching, a wonderful lady, also here in Ferguson decided to adopt her! YAY! Since she didn't have a fenced yard, a group of us put up a temporary wire fence to give her the needed opportunity to run. Mission accomplished. Until I got a phone call early yesterday morning, that she had escaped through a tiny gap that we had missed.
So off I drove in my pajamas, treats in tow, to search for this crazy girl. With God on her side, I spotted her about a mile from her new home. I hopped out of my car with leash and treats in hand, to retrieve her. Not so easy. She was absolutely not going to hop in my car as pictured in my mind. I grabbed her collar that had my phone number written on it, wrapped the leash around her, but she was absolutely not getting in and in fact kept dragging me further away from my destination. My car. So I sat with both arms around her, in the middle of the street, in my pj's. Without my phone. Talk about a sitting duck. I was NOT going to lose this dog that me and other's had worked so hard on, for a happy ending. So I started screaming for help. HEEELLLP! I couldn't move, risking her collar slipping over her head. I needed someone to call my husband to help me, as I could not drag her 70 lb self or lift her into my car alone. I felt like I was fighting a grizzly bear. HAHA. Fortunately a neighbor had called the police I'm sure saying "there is a crazy lady sitting in the middle of the street in her pajamas holding a dog and shouting for help"! When the officer pulled up, I was never so glad to see a strong man, ready to help me. Between the 2 of us, the officer helped me carry her back to my car, getting her to safety. What an experience, all for one plain dog. Looking back, this sight had to be pretty funny to onlookers. : - )
